WE ARE SOLD OUT OF BALSAM FIR FOR SHIPPING THIS SPRING. IF YOU ORDER YOU MUST CHOOSE A FALL SHIPPING DATE!
Please consider our Canaan firs which are a natural hybrid between balsam fir and Fraser fir, containing the best qualities of both. They grow faster and can withstand harsher conditions than either balsam or Fraser.
Please remember to put a delivery date at the bottom of the very last checkout page.
Please remember that we are trying to rid our farm and the world of plastics. If you don't need plastic bags, please don't order them. Since the seedlings are moist when we ship them, we prefer not to put the seedlings in burlap or other bags for shipment - we would package them separately in the same box, unless you order them that way, of course.
Our balsam fir plug seedlings are grown from seeds sourced from New England and Canada in our greenhouse. The plugs are moved outside for overwintering after a year in the greenhouse.
HARDINESS ZONES RECOMMENDED: 3 TO 6
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF BALSAM FIR
Balsam fir -abies balsamea- is native to Vermont and our area of the country and is the most common species grown for Christmas trees.
The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere. It is generally found in zones from sea level to about 5,000 feet in elevation. Growth is best on well-drained, sandy loam soils that are somewhat acidic. The species is tolerant of shade but prefers full sun and may reach 150-200 years of age.
